Introduction            Task            Resources            Evaluation             Conclusion

Objectives:

Students will be able to……

bullet

Use the Internet to research and collect data on the planets.

bullet

Compare the weight of an object on Earth to its possible weight on other planets.

bullet

Use prior knowledge of Excel formulas with collected data on the planets to create a graph comparing weight on Earth with each of the 8 planets.

Introduction:

Would you be strong enough to carry your favorite book on Neptune??? You already know that each planet has it’s own gravity but did you know that this differences would effect the weight of objects so that we might not be able to move them without assistance.  Let’s explore this further by using what you have learned about Excel and graphing.

You have a large task at hand and the best place to start is at the beginning.  The first thing you will need to do is complete some research on the planets.  So, lets see what we can find out about the planets. You will need that information to compile your data to form you graph comparing the weight of an object on Earth with that of each of the other 8 planets.  What you need to do is outlined by days this will help you stay organized and on track to completing your task.  Good Luck and Have Fun.

Task:

v    Time to research, use the Internet Research Worksheet, to help you keep track of your data.

v     Copy and paste the worksheet to a Word document.

v    Locate the following information on the planets in our solar system.

    ·        Gravity

    ·        Diameter

    ·        Distance from the sun

    ·        Length of a day

    ·        Length of a year

    ·        Volume

    ·        Density

    ·        Number of moons

v    You did remember to save often, didn’t you???

v    Once all the research is completed take the weight of and object or person on Earth. I’m sure you’ll find a scale in the classroom.

v    Use the weight of your object and your data in the planets to determine what the object would weigh on the other planets.  This needs to be done in Excel.

v    If you’re having problems with your Excel formulas but I’m working with another student and your classmates can’t help, try using the data on the following tutorial site.  http://www.baycongroup.com/el0.htm

v     Compare the weight of your object on all 9 planets by creating a graph using Excel.

v    To make sure you have the correct format refer to the Graph Rubric.

v    Once your graph is completed please save it to your personal file and save a copy into the Math folder on my, Lewisdrop file.

v     Now that your data is collected, all that’s left to do now is share your data with your fellow researchers.

Conclusion

By the conclusion of this WebQuest you will have become a very knowledgeable person on the planets in our solar system.  You will share this knowledge with your fellow students by presenting your graph and explain its data.  If you like you may also share one tidbit from your researcher that you feel is worth sharing with others.
