·        Recognize visual arts as a form of communication

·        Use the visual arts as a form of communication

·        Know and apply elements and principles of design

·        Know and apply sensory and expressive features of visual arts

·        Know materials, techniques, and processes

·        Apply materials, techniques, and processes

·        Understand the influence of the visual arts in creating cultures and

building civilizations

·        Understand individual expression and the expression of others

·         Analyze the characteristics, merits, and meaning of works of art

·        Assess and evaluate the characteristics, merits, and meaning of
     works of art

Introduction:

You are separated into 5 teams and will utilize the computers to look up the web site, http://www.nineplanets.org/overview.html to learn and gain background knowledge about the solar system.  You will then study the history of the solar system.   By doing so, you will gain the knowledge of visual art along with the time frame of the discovery of the planets, moon, stars and much more about the solar system.

Task:

  1. You will use the Internet in the media center to conduct searches of interesting historical facts about the solar system.

  2. After you have obtained a good background of the solar system via some basic classroom instruction, you will be divided into groups of five.

  3. You will decide which planets, stars and moons you want to replicate for  the time line presentation.

  4. A minimum of 5 replicas are required for the final presentation.

  5. You will decide upon the materials that they need to use to make the replicas looks as real as possible.

  6. You will divided up the jobs in order to have a final timeline to present on the due date. (4 weeks after day one)

  7. You will present your final project in from of the class in a 10-15   minute presentation where each student takes a section to explain.

Evaluation

·        How does a person find out if a star or a planet has been named?

·        Do you believe that there will be more discoveries of stars or planets?

·        How do you use a telescope?

·        Will any telescope work to look at the solar system?

·        How many planets are there?

·        Is there an easy way to remember the names of the planets?

·        What do you think the planets texture feels like?

·        How or what material could you use to recreate the way the solar system feels?

Conclusion

After completing the assignment, students will have a basic understanding of how the solar system was discovered.  The reproduction of the choice stars, planets and moon with school products will help the children receive a visual of the solar system without being there.  The presentation of the time line and of the solar system in front of the class will give the students more confidence and a clear understanding about how their project must be taken seriously because of the presentation in front of their peers.
