Mrs. Whittier is the principal of Shepard Elementary School where she has been a faculty member for 21 years. She has been privileged to consistently serve the same learning community enabling her to grasp a better understanding of the communities’ needs.

There are presently 290 students at Shepard.  However, the Shepard population has been as high as 600 students.

Mrs. Whittier was the Instructional Facilitator when Shepard won the Missouri Gold Star Award (1996) and the United States Blue Ribbon Award (1997).  Most recently (May 2005), the Shepard School Community has again won the Missouri Gold Star Award.

 

Mrs. Whittier has been recognized as Teacher of the Year (1992) and Outstanding Educator Kappa Delti Pi (2004).

She is a member of the St. Louis Consortium for Educational Renewal, the local arm of the National Network for Educational Renewal (John Goodlad). She is a member of the Executive Committee and a member of the board of that organization.

She is a member of the Tripartite Council of the NNER made up of university professors, superintendents and school persons.

The goal of this council is to develop recommendations regarding strategies the NNER should pursue in the next 5 to 7 years.

She is also a member of the Professional Development School Collaborative, a local organization made up of Schools and Colleges of Education working towards simultaneous renewal of those organizations.

Mrs. Whittier was asked to participate in University of Missouri’s Preparing Urban Leaders for Urban Schools sessions as a principal leader in 2001 and 2002.

 

Training/Expertise.

She has expanded her knowledge and skills by participating in a variety of seminars in management, leadership and school renewal.

Professional Beliefs and Goals

Mrs. Whittier can be characterized as a Constructivist Leader believing that leadership should be built among working professionals.  Purposes and goals develop from among the participants based upon values beliefs, individual and shared experiences. She strives to enable Shepard to function as a community that is self-motivating. She views the growth of its members as fundamental and believes that shared inquiry is an important activity in problem identification and resolution. She encourages her teachers to conduct action research and share findings as a way of improving practice.

 

Mrs. Whittier has written several grants to support the Shepard School’s learning communities’ vision to celebrate mastery achievement, and where self-esteem, caring and diversity are cherished attributes of the school, teachers, children,, parents and the community as a whole.

Mrs. Whittier is married with two children and 3 grandchildren.  Her hobbies are gardening, reading, and bike riding.
